Background

Father Maxim is a Georgian Orthodox monk who is currently rebuilding a small chapel and hermitage atop a 130ft natural rock column called Katskhi Pillar.  He hopes to receive the blessing from the Patriarch to one day retire up there and live as Stylite.  This would be the first time in six hundred years that a Stylite has inhabited Katskhi Pillar.

Georgian photojournalist Temo Bardzimashvili was the first to report on this remarkable story with a photo essay titled, "Georgian Monk Builds Stairway to Heaven" that was published by EurasiaNet online magazine in August 2010.  The story was also picked up by BBC World.

In October 2010 Maboroshi Productions, an independent film company, began development on a documentary about Father Maxim with the working title, The Stylite: a matter of faith.
